Let's Have A Chat About What Products Are Best For Your Skin Type/Condition...

I have written previous blogs about skin types and conditions, but now, I am going to go even deeper. This blog post is intended to help you understand your skin and what types of products can transform it! As well as...you know...booking a facial with the one and only ;)!

To book a facial with me, please email support@herbsspiceandeverythingnice.com for details. All services are performed at Cure Advanced Aesthetics Institute in Germantown, TN and are supervised by trained esthetics teachers.

Oily Skin - skin that over produces oil, especially in the nose, chin and forehead regions (T-zone) and may be accompanied by acne, clogged pores, and blackheads. You can have acne/problematic skin, which is oily skin with acne break outs and is commonly influenced by hormones or other environmental stressors. This type of skin needs: clarifying, detoxifying, oil-balancing/regulating, water-based, and exfoliating products. We want to add water to the skin to keep it hydrated, exfoliators to keep the pores clean, and clarifying/detoxifying/regulating products to maintain a healthy oil balance. It is important to note that if the skin has an active break out or infection, a mechanical exfoliator cannot be used. Instead, an enzyme exfoliator or an exfoliating acid would be a better alternative.

Product types for Oily Skin: (you can see our selection of oily skin products on our website)

  • foaming or gel cleansers (with salycilic acid)

  • toners with astringents

  • gentle AHA (lactic acid)/BHA exfoliants (oily skin loves salycilic acid (BHA)(willowbark extract, which is in our foaming cleansers)

  • clay masks (can benefit from twice a week)

  • hydrating masks (with hyaluronic acid, aloe, honey or rose)

  • retinol (vitamin A)(see our natural retinol serum)

  • niacinimide (vitamin B3)

  • hyaluronic acid (see our serum)

  • moisturizer (with a light emollient and antioxidants)

  • sunscreen (a physical sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30)

Combination Skin - skin that is oily in the T-zone, but may be dry and dehydrated around the cheeks, eyes, and outer forehead regions. May be accompanied by congestion of the pores and black heads around the nose and chin, and may have whiteheads in the areas of the cheeks. This skin type is lacking balance and needs a good combination of humectants (products that help the skin retain moisture) and emollients (light oils that help repair the barrier). It is also helpful to incorporate clarifying and detoxing products that also help regulate the oil production in the more oily areas.

Product types for Combination Skin:  (you can see our selection of combination skin products on our website)

  • gel or foaming cleansers (with salycilic acid)

  • toner

  • gentle exfoliants with AHA's/BHA's or a mechanical exfoliating agent (if no active break outs) (see our Green Tea Exfoliating Scrub)

  • clay mask (can benefit from twice a week)

  • retinol (vitamin A)(see our natural retinol serum)

  • niacinimide (vitamin B3)

  • hyaluronic acid (see our serum)

  • moisturizer (with a light emollient and antioxidants)

  • sunscreen (a physical sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30)

Mature/Aging/Dry Skin - skin that is characterized by fine lines and wrinkles, dehydration, dullness, and or flakiness. These skin types can be caused by diet, lifestyle, or simply the aging process, and from overexposure to UV rays and may have areas of hyperpigmentation or age spots. It's important to treat these types with products that help the skin retain moisture and with fatty acids and emollients that help protect the barrier and keep it youthful.

Products for Mature/Aging/Dry Skin - (you can see our selection of mature/dry/aging skin products on our website)

  • cream, gel, or lotion-based cleansers

  • toner with rose water (see our toner)

  • enzyme exfoliators

  • hydrating masks (aloe, honey, hyaluronic acid, collagen, and rose)

  • vitamin C (treats hyperpigmentation and helps brighten the skin)

  • retinol (vitamin A)(see our natural retinol serum)

  • hyaluronic acid

  • peptides and growth factors

  • moisturizers (that help lock in moisture and reduce the appearance of fine lines)

  • eye cream

  • sunscreen (a physical sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30)

Our skin is constantly aging, therefore, it is imperative that no matter the skin type you have, that you are wearing SPF and using products with preventative measures that help the skin age gracefully.

There are different types of sunscreen, as well. There are physical SPF's, which are more universal and can be used for even the most sensitive of skin types, or chemical SPF's, however, chemical SPF's are a common skin aggressor. An example of a chemical SPF would be one with an ingredient like oxybenzone. An example of a physical SPF would be one with ingredients such as titanium dioxide and size.

Also, it is very important to be exfoliating at least twice a week, at minimum, especially if you have the last skin types, in order to help speed up the cell renewal process. As I stated earlier, if you are experiencing active break outs or have a damaged and sensitized skin barrier, it would be better to wait until your barrier is restored before you start exfoliation.

I hope that you have found this blog to be helpful if you are on the hunt for trustworthy facial products or simply need an idea of a skin routine! Happy reading!

xoxo,

Dani Michelle

2024 Market Season

This year was our first year participating in farmers markets! We had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of Lightfoot Farms Market in Millington, TN for the entire year, and still have two left in November and December. This year has truly been a blessing to us and we look forward to 2025!
